Grandmaster Koneru Humpy created history on Sunday by clinching her second title at the FIDE Women’s World Rapid Chess Championship 2024 in New York. Despite a challenging start with a loss on the opening day, Humpy staged a remarkable comeback on Day 2 and surged to the top of the standings on the final day, triumphing over a strong field.
Governor of Andhra Pradesh, S Abdul Nazeer, lauded Humpy’s historic achievement, stating, “The nation is proud of Humpy’s remarkable feat. Education and IT Minister Nara Lokesh also heaped praise on Humpy, tweeting, “Your exceptional feat showcases grit, determination, and skill. You are a true legend of Indian chess, inspiring generations to come.”
YSRCP President and former Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy celebrated Humpy’s accomplishment, calling it a source of immense pride for Gudivada, Andhra Pradesh, and the nation. He said, “Her determination and excellence are inspiring, and we wish her continued success.”
AP Sports Minister Ramprasad Reddy commended Humpy’s outstanding performance in the 11-round competition, where she triumphed over Indonesia’s Irine Kharisma Sukandar to secure the top position. He highlighted her perseverance and skill, encouraging the youth to draw inspiration from her success.
