KTR steps to prevent loss of life

The incessant downpour over the past two days has created havoc for commuters across most parts of Telangana. Weather authorities have forecast heavy rain over the next two days also and an orange warning for July 22.

According to the Telangana State Development Planning Society, as of Wednesday 9:00 PM, Gandhari (Kamareddy) received the highest rainfall of 106.5 mm, followed by 102.8 mmat Zaffergadh (Jangain), 96.8 mm at Rampur (Siddipet) and 94.3 mmat Gannaram (Nizamabad).

Under GHMC limits, Shaikpet received the highest rainfall of 28.5 mm, followed by 22.3 mmat Golconda, 21 mmat Serilingampally, 20.3 mm at Khairatabad and 19.8 mm at Kukatpally.

The Indian Meteorological Department has issued a yellow warning for the next two days and an orange warning for July 22. For the next two days, heavy rain is very likely to occur at isolated places in the districts of Adilabad, Asifabad, Mancherial, Nirmal, Nizamabad, Jagtiyal, Sircilla and Bhupalpally.

Meanwhile for Hyderabad, for the next 48 hours there will be generally cloudy sky. Light to moderate intermittent rain at times and intense spells are very likely to occur in the city. The maximum and minimum temperature are likely to be around 27 and 22 degrees Celsius respectively.

The unrepaired roads on main junctions and colony roads of certain areas filled with potholes in areas such as Afzalgunj, Salarjungroad, Banjara hills, Malkajgiri, A.S Raonagar, Moulaali, Secunderabad.

In view of heavy rain forecast in Hyderabad in the coming two to three days, Municipal Administration and Urban Development (MA&UD) Minister KT Rama Rao directed senior officials from the Municipal Administration Department to take all necessary measures to prevent loss of life on priority.

At a review held at the Hyderabad Growth Corridor Limited (HGCL) office at Nanakramguda on Wednesday, the Minister directed the officials to coordinate seamlessly with other departments, especially with Electricity, Revenue and Police (Traffic) Departments, and the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB).

Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) officials informed the Minister that they had already undertaken various measures as part of monsoon preparedness. Dewatering pumps had been placed in low-lying areas and on arterial roads prone to flooding. The officials expressed confidence that strengthening of nalas as part of the Strategic Nala Development Plan (SNDP) would effectively address issues in flood-prone areas during the monsoon.

The sanitation management of Hyderabad city was also a major topic of discussion during the review. KTR emphasized the need for proactive measures and asked officials not to be complacent with the positive results achieved over the past few years. The Minister stated that with the city’s rapid expansion and increasing population, there had been a rise in garbage generation, necessitating a more robust sanitation management plan moving forward. The officials presented their immediate and short-term plans to address sanitation issues.

The Pioneer’scorrespondent was witnessto the woes of citizens due to the incessant rains. Parents stopped by to buy raincoats on the roadside to protect children from getting wet.

One of the parents near Mettuguda said, ” I don’t have a car but I have two children. How many days can I keep them away from school. Autos, buses are unsafe these days; so, whoever is at home me or my wife we will pick them from school and in normal days they come on foot. I stopped by to buy these raincoats for my children. It has become necessity for us.”

One of the residents of Moulali said that roads in their colonies had potholes. There were no sign boards near craters, along which soil was slippery. Even for those with vehicles the roads had become risky.
