Five Telangana NRIs languishing in Dubai jail

PNS|Hyderabad

Telangana Minister KT Rama Rao has urged the United Arab Emirates government to consider and approve the mercy petition relating to five NRIs from the Rajanna Sircilla district who are languishing in the Aweer Jail in Dubai.

The Minister, presently in Dubai on a business trip, met the UAE government officials and others to intensify his efforts to get the NRIs repatriated at the earliest. KTR spoke to the Indian Consul General in Dubai, the Arab lawyer handling the case of the NRIs, and government officials to enquire about the status of the case, before seeking approval of the mercy petitions. The five Indian nationals viz Shivarathri Mallesh, Shivarathri Ravi, Gollem Nampally, Dundugula Laxman and Shivarathri Hanmanthu are lodged in the Dubai prison in connection with a case relating to the death of a Nepali and they have already spent 15 years in jail. The Minister has been making all possible efforts for years to get them released.

KTR personally visited Nepal to meet the family of the deceased Nepali to hand over Rs.15 lakh towards ‘victim’s compensation’ as per Sharia Law ‘diyyah’ ( ‘blood money’). Later, the victim’s family submitted the mercy petition documents to the UAE government.

However, due to some reasons and the gravity of the crime, the UAE government has so far not approved the mercy petition. Even six months back, the Minister had enquired about the progress of the case and made several attempts to get them released.

During his current trip to Dubai, the Minister once again brought the facts of the case to the notice of the Indian Consul officials and the Dubai government officers. Expressing his concern, the Minister requested the UAE government to approve the mercy petition considering that the five NRIs had already served 15 years of their sentence and showed good conduct as per the jail authorities.

As the Dubai Court has rejected the case, KTR urged the officials he had met to get the five Indian nationals repatriated with the approval of the mercy petition by UAE ruler Sheikh Mohammed. The Minister earlier met a few businessmen who had close ties with the ruler’s family and requested their help in the release of the NRIs. The businessmen assured the Minister that they would take up the issue with the Dubai government within the purview of the local laws.

KTR made an earnest appeal to Indian Consul General Ram Kumar to put special efforts into solving the case and promised all the support at a personal level and from the government side.
