Minister for Education, IT, and Electronics, Nara Lokesh, developed a comprehensive roadmap for reforming the academic sector well before assuming his ministerial role. He prioritised addressing the challenges faced by underprivileged students, conducting a crucial meeting with senior officials of the Education Department on June 15 at his residence.
During the meeting, officials informed Lokesh about the delay in supplying textbooks to Intermediate students in government colleges. He expressed concern and questioned how students could pursue their studies without essential materials. He promptly directed officers to ensure the immediate supply of textbooks, notebooks, and other necessary resources.
When apprised that the total expenditure for supplying these materials would amount to approximately Rs 33 crores, Lokesh initiated steps to cover the costs and issued the necessary Government Orders (GOs) within three days to expedite the process.
Having witnessed the detrimental impact of drug abuse on youth, particularly on school, college, and university campuses, during his Yuva Galam Pada Yatra, Lokesh is preparing to form a joint action committee. This committee will implement measures to eradicate drug abuse in educational institutions.
The Minister is also determined that teachers should focus solely on teaching to ensure students receive quality education. Lokesh has decided to radically change the mid-day meal scheme to ensure students receive nutritious food. Additionally, he is formulating an action plan to upgrade all universities in the state to global standards.
Acknowledging the long-standing vacancies in professor positions over the past five years, Lokesh has decided to expedite the recruitment process.  He also plans to reopen schools that were closed during the YSRCP rule. Furthermore, arrangements are being made to clear all pending dues under the Vidya Deevena and Vasanthi Deevena schemes to ensure that certificates withheld by educational institutions due to unpaid fees are released to the students.
