MARRIAGES galore IN ‘KARTIKA MASAM’ Fewer ‘muhurats’ trigger demand for ‘purohits’, caterers

Must read

In the wake of a scarcity of auspicious ‘muhurats’ post Diwali during the ‘Karthika Masam’, a significant uptick in demand for ‘Purohits’ and caterers has been observed. The dearth of suitable ‘muhurats’ has led to a shortage of marriage and function halls, as well as ‘Purohits’ available for conducting ceremonies. Marriages during the ‘Karthika Masam’ are favoured due to the limited availability of ‘Muhurats’ in the preceding ‘Sravana Masam’. With merely 11 auspicious days in November and December combined, individuals find themselves compelled to wait until the summer of 2024 for opportune ‘Muhurats’.
According to the ‘panchangam’, November and December offer fewer auspicious ‘muhurats’ for conducting marriages. In November, auspicious days fall on the 23rd, 24th, 27th, 28th, and 29th (five days), while in December, ‘muhurats’ are available on the 3rd, 4th, 7th, 8th, 9th, and 15th (six days). Pundits highlight ‘Karthika Masam’ as a sacred month, with a majority of Hindus choosing this period for various events, primarily marriages. Pundits emphasise the absence of favourable ‘muhurats’ until the summer of 2024, compelling parents to host their children’s weddings within the limited available slots in 2023.
Surprisingly, there is a surging demand for ‘purohits’ to officiate marriages during these auspicious ‘muhurats’, with priests quoting fees ranging from Rs 30,000 to Rs 50,000 for their services. Priests find themselves busy, managing multiple ceremonies on specific auspicious ‘muhurat’ days. Furthermore, all conventional marriage and function halls are fully booked, prompting some parents to opt for hotels and open spaces for their children’s weddings. Concurrently, cooks and caterers are experiencing heightened demand during these days. Cooks from Indupalli, near Gudivada in Krishna district, are particularly renowned for their delectable recipes at marriages and large gatherings, and they report being fully booked, according to B Suvarna Raju, chief cook from Indupalli.
Parent M Srinivasa Rao shared that their initial plan was to host their son’s wedding a few months later. However, upon realising the waiting period of at least five months, they decided to proceed with the marriage in the first week of December.
