The Beach Road came alive with the rhythmic pounding of feet as thousands of enthusiastic runners participated in the third edition of the Vizag Marathon on Monday. Organised by the Vizag Runners Society in collaboration with Sandhya Marines, the event was a testament to the city’s growing fitness culture. Runners of all ages, from young children to seasoned athletes, lined up at the starting point near the iconic Kali Matha Temple. The marathon offered four categories: 21k, 10k, 5k, and 3k, catering to participants of varying fitness levels.
MP M. Sribharat and Police Commissioner Dr. Shanka Brata Bagchi joined the runners, showcasing their support for a healthy lifestyle. “It’s inspiring to see the community come together for such a positive cause. Events like these not only promote fitness but also foster a sense of unity and pride in our city,” said the MP.
Beyond the competitive spirit, the marathon served as a platform for social causes. The Vizag Runners Society partnered with the GVMC to promote ‘Eco Vizag’ and with the city police for the Drug-free Vizag campaign. Participants actively engaged in raising awareness about these crucial issues.
Kancheti Srinivas, secretary of the Vizag Runners Society, expressed his delight at the event’s success. “Our aim is to make Vizag a running hub and showcase its beauty to the world. The overwhelming participation is a testament to our efforts,” he said. The winners of the marathon were celebrated with great enthusiasm. Ar. R. Naik and Soumya Saraswati emerged victorious in the 21k category for men and women, respectively. Harish and Grace clinched the top spots in the 10k race.
Balakrishna Rai, president of Vizag Runners Society, thanked the participants, sponsors, and volunteers for making the marathon a resounding success. “This event is more than just a race; it’s a celebration of health, unity, and the spirit of Visakhapatnam.”
