Minister Savitha met with Union Minister of Handlooms and Textiles Giriraj Singh in a courtesy visit on Sunday in Delhi. The meeting took place during the India Tex 2025 International Exhibition, where Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the audience at the Indian Pavilion on Sunday.
During their discussion, Minister Savitha urged the Central government to provide support for the development of the handloom industry in the State. She highlighted that due to the ineffectiveness of past administrations over the last five years, the handloom sector in Andhra Pradesh has faced significant challenges. The lack of market facilities for handloom products and the absence of encouragement from the previous government have left thousands of families in distress, she noted.
Expressing her concern, she mentioned that many weavers have resorted to extreme measures, unable to repay debts or sell their products. She expressed optimism that after the 2024 elections, the new NDA government led by Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu would bring better days for the handloom sector. Minister Savitha pointed out that a new textile policy was recently introduced and efforts are underway to reinstate the various schemes implemented by the Chandrababu government between 2014 and 2019. She stressed that the Chief Minister has decided to exempt handloom products from GST to support the weavers.
Savitha conveyed to Minister Giriraj Singh that if the Central government extends its support, it would offer greater financial security to the weavers. The Union Minister responded positively to Minister Savita’s requests for assistance in attracting investments in the handloom sector. Accompanying Minister Savitha were State Handloom and Textiles Department Commissioner Rekha Rani and other officials.
