Transport Minister Ponnam Prabhakar launched Bajaj Gogoro’s new range of electric auto-rickshaws at The Park Hotel on Tuesday, signalling the Telangana Government’s full support for eco-friendly mobility and reaffirming the state’s EV policy.

Congratulating the company on its transition, Ponnam said, “Bajaj has been in the motor field for over 62 years. Adapting to changing times, they have introduced electric vehicles that serve both consumers and the public.”

He praised the new model’s design, stating that it brings “a super-luxury feel to the humble auto-rickshaw.”

Drawing a comparison with Delhi’s alarming pollution levels, he warned, “We don’t want Hyderabad to become another New Delhi. That’s why we have brought in a clear EV policy, valid till 2026.”

He emphasised that Telangana is the first state to announce zero tax for all categories of electric vehicles, sacrificing revenue for public health.

Ponnam said the use of EVs, CNG, and LPG vehicles is on the rise. “Within the Outer Ring Road, the government has decided to phase out traditional IC vehicles and allow only EVs, CNG, or LPG ones. Discussions with Union Minister Nitin Gadkari have already taken place regarding converting the nearly 2,800 TGSRTC buses in Hyderabad to electric ones,” he said.

In a move to widen the use of green public transport, he also said that electric autoricks to transport both goods and passengers are being promoted with stylish designs.

Referring to employment schemes, Ponnam said the government has introduced the Rajiv Yuva Vikasam programme to support SC, ST, BC, and minority youth.

Addressing rumours that the free travel for women in TGSRTC buses has affected auto-rickshaw drivers, he clarified, “Buses operate from bus stations, but auto-rickshaws can pick you from your doorstep and drop you at your destination. Both have their own space.”

On the issue of permits, he acknowledged that issuing new permits for auto-rickshaws in Hyderabad has been put on hold. “The government is reviewing the matter. Meanwhile, existing auto-rickshaws should explore retrofitting with new engines,” he said.

He also mentioned initiatives like ‘Vahana Sarathi’ and the vehicle scrapping policy as part of the broader moves to modernise the transport sector.
