CPM politburo member and former member of Rajya Sabha Brinda Karat has stated that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has no right to continue in the PM chair, as he failed to control attacks on women, Dalits and tribals. She demanded that the Andhra Pradesh State government should constitute a commission regarding the violence against women and their safety.

The All-India Democratic Women Association (AIDWA) conducted a State-wide ‘Poru Yatra’ against violence, from Hindupur and from Visakhapatnam from July 27 to August 7. These two Poru Yatras reached Vijayawada on August 7 and a public meeting was held at the Gymkhana Grounds on Tuesday.

Addressing the gathering, Brinda Karat said that the BJP-led Central government did not react to the violence against the tribals and women in Manipur. Because of Sangh Parivar and fascists, women are not safe in the country. The women should resist these policies united, she said.

Further, she said that after the BJP-led NDA government came to power, attacks on women have increased. Every day, around 86 women face sexual assault. In 74 per cent cases, the accused skip punishments, she complained.

She said that 35 lakh cases of violence against women were registered from 2014 to 2022 and another 3 lakh cases were reported for sexual assaults against girls. The Central government should constitute fast-track courts to expedite investigation in these cases, she demanded.

AIDWA State president Prabhavati presided over the public meeting. State general secretary D Rama Devi, senior leaders Putumbaka Bharathi, Yarlagadda Joya, Shramika Mahila Sangham convener K Dhana Lakhsmi, Anganwadi Workers and Helpers Union State general secretary Subbaravamma, and others were present.
