Senior and versatile actor Manchu Mohan Babu is set to celebrate his 73rd birthday in a grand manner at his university today. On this special occasion, his son, Vishnu Manchu, has planned an extravagant event in Tirupati.
Mohan Babu, who is both acting in and producing the prestigious film Kannappa, scheduled to release on April 25, will have a special promotional video dedicated to his role as Mahadeva Shastri, which will be unveiled on his birthday. The veteran actor began his cinematic journey in 1975, but it was during the late 1970s through the early 1990s that he redefined the portrayal of villains in Indian cinema. Known for his versatility and commanding screen presence, he revolutionised the antagonist’s role, making him one of the most sought-after villains of that era. While his debut as a lead actor was in Swargam Narakam (1978), it was his impactful negative roles that solidified his status as one of the industry’s most formidable actors.
After excelling in negative roles, Mohan Babu transitioned into lead roles with blockbuster films like Assembly Rowdy, Alludu Garu, Allari Mogudu and several others. His 1995 hit Peddarayudu became a massive success, cementing his status as a superstar. In this film, he played a dual role, while his close friend Rajinikanth made a special appearance.
Mohan Babu also established himself as a producer, debuting with Prathigna in 1981. Over the years, he has backed several acclaimed films, with Kannappa being his latest and most ambitious project.
Beyond films, Mohan Babu has made significant contributions to education. In 1992, he founded the Sri Vidyanikethan Educational Trust to provide quality education to students, irrespective of their socio-economic background. Furthering his commitment to education, he inaugurated Mohan Babu University in 2022, marking another milestone in his legacy.
In recognition of his contributions to the arts, he was honored with the Padma Shri in 2007, one of India’s highest civilian awards. With 75 films under his belt as a producer, Mohan Babu holds the distinction of being one of the few actor-turned-producers in Indian cinema to achieve such a remarkable feat. His impact as an actor, producer and philanthropist continues to shape the industry.
