The Governor, Dr Tamilisai Sounderarajan, said that she carried out a sudden inspection of the Osmania General Hospital on Monday as she had received several letters from doctors and students regarding its condition and as they had requested her to inspect it.

She said that as she moved around the general ward she found that there was no proper infrastructure and that the toilets were dirty.

The Governor said that a new building is a must for OGH and that the authorities must take her suggestions constructively.

She said that officials must take action to ensure the well-being of patients and that the hospital needs at least 3,000 to 4,000 beds. She said that the hospital is managing with just one building while there is a need for two to three buildings.

She said that the public must understand the doctors’ problems and that they are working in a high-risk situation. She said that as a doctor it was disheartening to see the condition of poor patients.

During her visit, the Governor checked out the post-operative ward and the general ward, both of which she described as unsatisfactory.

Dr Tamilsai clarified that her intention was not to start a blame game but to ensure that poor patients received the best possible treatment as government hospitals are their only hope. As a resident of the state, she urged the government to improve the OGH’s infrastructure and treatment facilities.

The Governor expects all concerned authorities to take her suggestions constructively and to take appropriate measures. She emphasized her perspective as a doctor and reiterated that the well-being of patients will always be her top concern.

The Governor said that she wants the government to take immediate action to construct a new building with at least 3,000 beds. In case there are legal obstacles due to the heritage status of the old building, she said that alternative arrangements should be made promptly.

Dr Tamilisai stressed that patients should not suffer and that their welfare must be the only priority.
