The AP Crime Investigation Department (CID) has registered a case against TDP chief N Chandrababu Naidu and party general secretary Nara Lokesh, among others, for their alleged involvement in disseminating misleading information regarding the Land Titling Act.
Acting on the orders of the Election Commission of India, the CID has formally filed a criminal case, designating Naidu as A-1 and Lokesh as A-2.
The complaint was lodged by YSRCP MLA Malladi Vishnu from Vijayawada, prompting the CID to take action. The FIR, lodged at the CID Police Station in Mangalagiri, cites various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
Evidence, including audio files contained in a pen drive, has been cited in the FIR, alleging that Naidu and Lokesh orchestrated a deceptive campaign concerning the Land Titling Act.
Vishnu asserted that voters were being targeted with IVR calls containing messages disparaging YS Jagan Mohan Reddy and advocating support for Naidu, falsely claiming that the Land Titling Act would jeopardise their wealth and land records.
The YSRCP has accused the TDP of deliberately maligning YS Jagan Mohan Reddy by spreading misinformation about the Land Titling Act proposed by the incumbent government. Vishnu’s complaint highlighted that the content of the IVR calls violated the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) by disseminating falsehoods and launching personal attacks on political opponents.
The CID, acting under the EC’s orders, has initiated an investigation, invoking sections 171 (F)(G), 188,505(2) along with 120 (b) IPC. Alongside Naidu and Lokesh, ten others have been named in the case, including the entities responsible for the IVR calls. The primary accused listed is Chandrababu Naidu, followed by his son Nara Lokesh, the TDP party, the electronic campaign team of TDP, the owner of the IVR call service, and others. Notices have been served, including to the TDP state office.
Earlier directives from the Additional Chief Electoral Officer MN Harendhira Prasad prompted the AP CID additional DG to initiate an investigation into the TDP’s alleged false propaganda surrounding the Land Titling Act. Subsequently, the AP CID formally registered the case and commenced the investigation process.
