New DGP Harish outlines his vision for AP police

Harish Kumar Gupta, IPS (1992), has assumed the position of Director General of Police (DGP) of Andhra Pradesh. Expressing his gratitude towards Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu for placing his trust in him, Gupta outlined his vision for the police force. Addressing the media on Friday after assuming charge, the DGP affirmed his commitment to following the path set by the Chief Minister and working towards achieving the SwarnAndhra Vision 2047 goals, with a particular focus on strengthening the police department.
Highlighting the rising threat of cybercrimes, DGP Gupta detailed plans to bolster cyber security. He announced that special attention would be given to reducing cybercrime, with the establishment of a dedicated Cyber Security Police Station in every district. Additionally, 600 Cyber Commandos would be recruited and trained at IITs to effectively tackle cybercrimes. Strict action would be taken against social media-related offences and cybercrimes, he added.
Gupta emphasised the need for increased CCTV surveillance in crime-prone areas. He stated that efforts would be made to identify criminals swiftly and ensure they face legal consequences. Furthermore, AI technology would be harnessed to address traffic issues and enhance traffic management systems. DGP Gupta also stressed the importance of strengthening the Narcotics Division to combat drug-related crimes more effectively.
The new DGP assured that police welfare would be prioritised, with a focus on ensuring swift promotions within the department.
He also highlighted the need for improved health services for police personnel, recognising their well-being as crucial for the force’s overall performance.
Gupta promised that work on the Police Academy and Greyhounds facility would be expedited, as the government has allocated the necessary land for these projects. He also shared plans to further strengthen the Greyhounds force, which specialises in counter-insurgency and anti-Naxal operations.
While the Dial 100 service is functioning well, the DGP assured that efforts would be made to enhance its efficiency. He also acknowledged the good performance of the Crime and Criminal Tracking Network and Systems, with plans to further improve it to speed up criminal investigations and make the system more efficient.
DGP Harish Kumar Gupta emphasised the importance of “conviction-based policing” as a key strategy for improving the efficiency of the police system. He expressed confidence that implementing these measures would help control crime, advance the progress of the police department, and ensure better security for the public.
