NFDB wants additional land to expand fisheries

A meeting chaired by Special Chief Secretary of the State Animal Husbandry Department Sabyasachi Ghosh, and Chief Executive of the National Fisheries Development Board (NFDB) Dr Bijay Kumar Behera, was held today at the Secretariat. Officials from the Telangana Fisheries Department also participated in the discussion, focusing on enhancing the fisheries wealth in Telangana through coordinated efforts by central and state agencies.  
NFDB officials urged the State government to allocate an additional 10 acres of land adjacent to the NFDB office building in Rajendranagar to expand fisheries development activities. Furthermore, it was decided to hold a meeting with field-level fisheries officials on January 7 and 8 to raise awareness about NFDB schemes and funding opportunities.   It was decided to utilise funds allocated under PMMSY 2024-25, available in the SNA-SPARSH account, by the end of the financial year.  A proposal was made to establish a specialiwed facility for carp fish breeding at Yellampalli Reservoir in Mancherial district with a 100 per cent grant of Rs 25 crore under the PMMSY Central Sector Scheme 2024-25. Additionally, Rs 2 crore has been proposed for recreational fisheries at Shamirpet Lake in Medchal-Malkajgiri district. The meeting also emphasised clearing all pending cases under the Group Accident Insurance Scheme related to the Fisheries Department.  To promote fish consumption and value-added fish products, the NFDB and Fisheries Department proposed organizing the “Fish Festival 2025” at People’s Plaza, Necklace Road, Hyderabad, in February/ March 2025.  

The meeting was attended by Dr Bijay Kumar Behera, Chief Executive of NFDB, P. Nehru, Executive Director of NFDB, and officials from the Telangana Fisheries Department.
