As the BJP did not get a majority in the Lok Sabha elections, the people expected a change in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s style of functioning. But their hopes have been shattered, TPCC Senior Vice-President G. Niranjan said.
Speaking to the media at the Gandhi Bhavan on Friday, Niranjan said that everyone expected that the Deputy Speaker post would be offered to the opposition to create a harmonious atmosphere but Modi is reluctant to do that.
On the first day after the Lok Sabha Speaker election, Speaker Om Birla read the resolution on the 1975 Emergency and tried to target the Congress, he said.
President Draupadi Murmu also referred to the Emergency in her speech in Parliament on Thursday. This indicates how Modi and the BJP would function in future, he said.
He said that even though Indira Gandhi lost the election in 1977 after the Emergency, she won the 1980 LS election and became the Prime Minister. They are not uttering a single word on this event, he pointed out. Welcoming the President with the Sengol in Parliament on Thursday signals monarchy, Niranjan said and added that Lord Mountbatten presented the Sengol to Nehru as a sign of change when the British left the country.
The British had a monarchy and it might be appropriate for them, but, unfortunately, this tradition is being adopted by Modi in a democratic country like India, he said.
Niranjan criticised the Centre saying that even in the President’s speech there was no solace for NEET candidates. Prime Minister Modi has not expressed concern over the NEET question paper leak, he said.
