Special Chief Secretary (Energy) K. Vijayanand on Tuesday said that Andhra Pradesh is meeting the growing power demand during summer through a mix of sources, including thermal and hydel plants, solar and wind power, Central Generating Stations (CGS), and energy purchased via power exchanges.
Reviewing the power supply situation with officials of APTRANSCO, APGENCO, and DISCOMs at the State Secretariat, Vijayanand said that power is also being managed through swapping arrangements with other States, particularly during morning and evening peak hours.
He stated that the State is expected to reach a peak demand of 12,358 MW and a daily requirement between 217 and 245 million units (MU) during the summer and monsoon months from May to October 2025. He noted that although the State has an installed capacity of 21,728 MW, nearly half of it comes from renewable sources, which are intermittent and not available round-the-clock.
The Special Chief Secretary informed that Andhra Pradesh recorded its highest-ever power demand of 13,117 MW on 25 April 2025, with total energy consumption for the month reaching 7,087 MU. However, there was a 3.57 per cent decline in overall energy consumption compared to April 2024.
Vijayanand said that power utilities successfully met demand between 30 April and 4 May without any shortfall, despite high temperatures and variable weather. During this period, daily demand ranged from 199.22 MU to 234.75 MU.
He reiterated the State government’s commitment to ensuring 24×7 quality and reliable power supply, describing it as essential for supporting farmers, households, and economic activities. He said Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu and Energy Minister Gottipati Ravi Kumar are committed to strengthening the power sector to handle extreme weather conditions.
Vijayanand also reviewed consumer complaints, industrial feeder interruptions, distribution transformer failures, and outages in 33 kV and 11 kV feeders. He directed DISCOMs to resolve complaints promptly, keep consumers informed about maintenance schedules, and increase awareness on safety and energy conservation.
The review meeting was attended by APGENCO MD K.V.N. Chakradhar Babu, APTRANSCO JMD Kirthi Chekuri, Director (Grid) A.K.V. Bhaskar, Director (Thermal) P. Ashok Kumar Reddy, CE (Commercial) Rajendra Prasad, SE (Commercial) K.G. Srinivas, FA Satyanarayana Murthy, and senior officials from APSPDCL and APEPDCL.
