Dr. VK Saraswat, a member of NITI Aayog, has emphasised the critical role of nuclear power in India’s journey towards achieving net-zero energy emissions by 2070. Addressing the International Syn Fuels Conference 2024 organised by GITAM Deemed to be University here on Monday, Dr. Saraswat underscored the need for a balanced energy mix comprising both nuclear and renewable energy sources. “India’s current energy landscape, heavily reliant on fossil fuels, particularly coal, necessitates a significant shift towards cleaner alternatives,” Dr Saraswat noted. He highlighted the advantages of nuclear power, including its clean energy generation, reduced reliance on critical minerals, and proven
track record of safety and reliability. Advocating for a paradigm shift from large reactors to small modular reactors (SMRs), Dr. Saraswat stressed the importance of industry involvement in this transition. He expressed optimism about recent budgetary allocations for the research and development of Bharat Small Modular Reactors and advancements in nuclear technologies. Additionally, he called for exploring alternative nuclear fuels like thorium to reduce the country’s dependence on uranium imports.
Prof Y Gowtham Rao, In-charge Vice-Chancellor of GITAM, echoed Dr. Saraswat’s views, and emphasised the need for clean, affordable electricity to achieve net-zero goals. He urged the scientific community to innovate and develop new energy sources for the benefit of society. The conference brought together experts including Prof. KS Krishna, Dean of GITAM School of Science; Prof. VSRK Prasad, Founder Director of IIPE; Prof. M Ganapati, Director of VT India Nuclear Energy Partnership (USA), and Prof K Vedavathi, Principal of GITAM School of Science.
