To strengthen the “One District One Product” campaign, District Collector Dr. Manazir Jeelani Samoon has unveiled a dual approach to boost the production and promotion of handloom items within the district. The Andhra Pradesh Handloom Weavers Cooperative Society (AAPCO) is actively introducing fresh designs for their products, along with value-added items and ready-to-wear clothing. This strategic approach aims to meet the changing preferences of consumers and maintain the significance of Srikakulam’s handloom industry in today’s market.
To broaden their market presence and appeal to younger demographics, AAPCO is providing a 30-per cent discount on all their offerings. This initiative aims to encourage a wider acceptance of handloom fabrics and foster a renewed admiration for their exceptional quality and skilled artistry. In acknowledgement of the significant importance of community involvement, the district administration has put into action a distinctive policy. With immediate effect, all district officers, divisional officers, mandal-level officers, and their subordinates must wear handcrafted garments made in Srikakulam district every Monday.
This initiative serves the dual purpose of bolstering the livelihoods of local artisans specialising in handloom products and fostering a strong sense of pride and belonging within the community by actively highlighting the district’s vibrant cultural heritage, as exemplified by its handloom tradition.
