OU inaugurates cell culture lab at Dept of Genetics

Osmania University Vice-Chancellor Prof D Ravinder, along with Prof P Laxminarayana, Registrar, OU, and Prof B Reddya Naik inaugurated the Department of Biotechnology – Boost to University Interdisciplinary Life Science Departments for Education and Research (DBT-BUILDER) primary cell culture lab facility at the Department of Genetics on Monday.
The DBT is dedicated to supporting Life Science departments in various Central and State universities, promoting unprecedented inter-departmental collaboration with the vision to nurture post-graduate students, teachers and research scholars, making them competent for the globally competitive emerging bio-economy.
The varsity has sanctioned Rs 8.03 crore for the “DBT-BUILDER Programme for a period of five years. The Co-Ordinator of the programme is Prof Smita C Pawar from the Department of Genetics, OU, with Co-Coordinators Prof Jitender K Naik from the Department of Zoology, OU, and Prof Karuna Rupula from the Department of Biochemistry, OU. Eighteen faculty members from seven Life Sciences departments are part of this project as principal investigators.

The main objectives of the project are to facilitate inter-disciplinary research in emerging areas of Biological Sciences such as Genomics, Nanobiology and Therapeutics, along with the training of faculty, college teachers, research scholars and technical assistants in these areas. Additionally, the programme aims to provide high-end instruments, laboratories and facilities by acquiring new instruments, repairing and maintaining equipment and upgrading existing facilities and equipment.
