People in positions of authority should avoid even the implication of impropriety. This explains why Roman general and statesman Julius Caesar’s 62 BC comment “my wife ought not to be even under suspicion” (upon divorcing his wife) subsequently became the proverb “Caesar’s wife must be above suspicion”. Caesar’s wife, Pompeia, was then merely under suspicion of illicit behavior. Telangana Chief Minister Anumula Revanth Reddy has cryptically indicated how babus cannot successfully reach him through homely entrances and backchannels. The Chief Minister, sharing his views on how babus tend to be over enthusiastic in ‘connecting’ with power centres, revealed that some of the officials are now calling his brothers, and going and meeting them. Revanth then amplified on the incongruity by pointing out that normally family members of those in authority call up officials. This interesting giveaway has left the babudom whispering in the corridors of power about the officials who are unabashedly making a beeline to reach the CM. Already the presence of CM’s brother at an official review meeting has given ammunition for opposition charge. Hope, overenthusiastic officials got the message.
