Minister Komatireddy Venkat Reddy demanded that Palampur district must be named after former union minister S Jaipal Reddy and said that he would request Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy about it.
S Jaipal Reddy Memorial Foundation organised the 82nd birth anniversary of Jaipal Reddy on Tuesday in the city at Spoorthi Sthal, Jaipal Reddy’s memorial on PVR Marg (Necklace Road), near Sanjeevaiah Park.
Spoorthi Sthal, a memorial built to honour his indelible legacy and lifetime spent in service of the people, was commemorated. Floral tributes were offered by his family members, several leaders and followers. Telangana is the first State to organise his birthday celebrations officially.
Hyderabad Metro Rail Limited (HMRL) MD NVS Reddy paid floral tributes to Jaipal Reddy on his birth anniversary. He stated that Jaipal Reddy was instrumental in sanctioning the Hyderabad Metro Rail project by Government of India and its approval of Viability Gap Funding for the project, as the former Union Minister for Urban Development. The MD reminded that Hyderabad city got a metro train as a result of Jaipal Reddy’s hard work.
He recalled that initially the Metro Rail projects of Delhi, Hyderabad, Mumbai and Bengaluru got stalled on the issue of ‘gauge’, as Indian Railways opposed the proposal of the Metro Rail Corporations to adopt standard gauge (4’8”) which is the standard practice for Metro Rail systems all over the world. Indian Railways insisted upon the adoption of broad gauge (5’6”) which created a lot of problems for the upcoming Metro Rail projects.
NVS Reddy mentioned that Jaipal Reddy guided him to make a convincing presentation to the Group of Ministers (GoM) headed by Sharad Pawar and consisting of the former Central Ministers S Jaipal Reddy, P Chidambaram, Lalu Prasad Yadav and Hansraj Bhardwaj regarding the need for standard gauge for Metro projects. The presentation made by HMRL MD to the GoM ultimately clinched Govt. of India’s decision in favour of standard gauge. He stated that this decision, which was based on Jaipal Reddy’s strong support, laid the ground for the fructification of the Hyderabad Metro and all other Metro Rail projects in the country.
