Phule’s legacy a beacon of social reform: Chief Secy

Chief Secretary K Vijayanand paid floral tributes to Mahatma Jyotirao Phule on the occasion of his 199th birth anniversary at the CS camp office in Vijayawada on Friday. General Administration Department Principal Secretary Mukesh Kumar Meena and other senior officials also participated in the event and offered their respects.
Speaking on the occasion, CS Vijayanand described Phule as a visionary social reformer, writer, and thinker from Maharashtra who dedicated his life to the upliftment of the marginalised.
He underlined Phule’s pivotal role in initiating social change in India and emphasised the importance of remembering his contributions to society.
He urged citizens to take inspiration from Phule’s life and legacy, and to learn more about the multifaceted reformer on his birth anniversary. He also acknowledged the remarkable contributions of Phule’s wife, Savitribai Phule, particularly her pioneering work in promoting women’s education in India.
Recalling Phule’s social activism, the Chief Secretary noted that in 1873, he established the Satyashodhak Samaj to fight caste-based and economic inequalities. He also opposed child marriage and supported the rights of widows to remarry.
