A tragic incident unfolded on Sunday at Reddyvaripalem village in Chandragiri mandal, as a 19-year-old medical college student drowned in the Swarnamukhi River.

The deceased, identified as Karthik, was a second-year Physiotherapy student at Venkata Padmavathi Medical College. The unfortunate incident occurred when Karthik, accompanied by his friends Santosh and Mehaboob Basha, decided to take a swim in the river.

According to CI Rajasekhar Reddy, during their ill-fated outing, Karthik accidentally fell into a deep ditch that had been dug up by sand extractors in the river bed, leading to his drowning.

Rescue efforts were promptly initiated, and Karthik’s lifeless body was eventually retrieved from the river. The Chandragiri police have registered a case in connection with the incident and have transferred the body to the GGH (Government General Hospital) for postmortem examination.

Karthik, hailing from Dhone town in Kurnool district, had a bright future ahead of him in the medical field. His untimely demise has sent shockwaves through the community, leaving his family, friends, and college faculty in deep grief.

The incident serves as a grim reminder of the need for caution when engaging in recreational activities near water bodies, especially during monsoon season when the water levels can be unpredictable and hazardous.

As the community mourns the loss of this promising young student, authorities are urged to ensure better safety measures at popular swimming spots to prevent such tragedies in the future.
