The SCCL officials accompanied by the One Town Police personnel, SCCL security staff, and workshop employees cut off power supply to various SCCL quarters in Godavarikhani industrial area in the district on Saturday to force the employees to vacate the quarters. The plan is to build a shopping complex in the area pulling down the SCCL quarters.
However, the move met with stiff residence from the families of the Singareni workers who staged a protest and threatened to commit suicide if they were forced to vacate the quarters.
The demolition plan of the SCCL quarters in the town came under severe criticism. The controversy has been raging for over several months.
The plan to pull down the Singareni quarters under the guise of road widening and build shopping complexes in their place has attracted wide-spread criticism and opposition from all quarters.
In the latest development, the SCCL officials on Saturday cut off power supply to the quarters in Sivaji Nagar, Hanman Nagar, Medara Basti areas, triggering severe backlash from the Singareni employees’ families.
They went to the extent of entering into a wordy duel with Circle I Indirasena Reddy. They threatened to commit suicide if the employees were forced to vacate the quarters. BRS leader Kausik Hari breathed fire on the SCCL authorities saying that it was not proper on their part to support the unilateral decision of a politician to pull down the quarters.
The SCCL officials reportedly admitted to have taken under the duress of a politician.
