Polavaram backwater impact minimised this year : Rajat

Special Chief Secretary Rajat Kumar said that the impact of Polavaram backwater was minimised this year as the government has taken up the matter with Polavaram Project Authority(PPA) well in advance and ensured that all the gates of Polavaram project were kept open during the recent floods. The Special Chief Secretary conducted a review on Tuesday in Jalasoudha Building on flood situation in the State and permanent mitigation measures to be taken.

Detailed discussions were held on the proposals of the expert committee constituted in September 2022 to conduct detailed surveys all along the catchment of the River Godavari and also to study the hydrology and backwater analysis. After elaborate discussion, decision was taken to study flood protection works on other rivers like Ganga, Brahmaputra, etc., for adopting suitable measures on Godavari River. Protection measures shall be taken for key installations like Bhadrachalam Temple, Parnashala, Manuguru Heavy Water Plant etc. Relocation of affected villages lying in high flood level of Godavari River.

Out of 37 streams joining Godavari River, protection measures shall be taken for 7 major streams having a discharge of more than 10,000 cusecs. Interventions like Groynes / Spurs shall be proposed wherever necessary. Mitigation measures shall also be proposed in river reaches experiencing scours. A committee is constituted with department engineers and external experts to finalise the report in a month and submit to Government for consideration.
