Telangana received record rains on Wednesday night and Thursday morning.

Laxmidevipeta in Telangana’s Mulugu district recorded the highest-ever rain in the state during the 24 hours that ended Thursday morning. The Chief Secretary said that 10,696 people from 108 villages were shifted to safer places. A village in Venkatapur mandal received 64.98 cm of rain.

Officials said the previous highest rain was 51.75 cm at Wazeed in the same district on July 19, 2013. The Telangana government declared Friday a holiday for all educational institutions due to rains.

The State’s cumulative 24 hours average rain was 97.7 mm, which breaks all records.

With the southwest monsoon vigorous over Telangana, several districts received heavy rains since Wednesday.

Around 35 places received over 20 cm of rainfall while 200 places recorded over 10 cm rainfall during the 24-hour period that ended at 8 am on Thursday.

Mulugu, Jayashankar Bhupalapally, Bhadradri Kothagudem, Hanumakonda, Warangal, Mahabubabad, Jangaon, Karimnagar and Adilabad districts experienced isolated extremely heavy rainfall (more than 204.4 mm).

Chityal in Jayashankar Bhupalapally recorded 61.65 cm of rainfall. Chelpur in Jayashankar Bhupalapally received 47.58 cm. Regonda in the same district recorded a rainfall of 46.70 cm.

According to the Telangana State Development Planning Society, during the last 24 hours, the state received an average rainfall of 97.7 mm against the normal 7.1 mm. Thus the state received 1,276 per cent excess rainfall during the period.

Many places in Adilabad, Kumuram Bheem, Mancherial, Nirmal, Nizamabad, Rajanna Sircilla, Peddapalli, Siddipet, Yadadri Bhuvanagiri, Suryapet, Khammam, Jayashankar, Mulugu, Hanumakonda, Warangal, Mahbubabad, Jangaon, Bhadradri Kothagudem, Karimnagar and Jagtial districts received very heavy rains (115.6 mm–204.4 mm).Heavy rainfall (64.5 mm–115.5 mm) was recorded at many places in Adilabad, Kumuram Bheem, Mancherial, Nirmal, Nizamabad, Rajanna Sircilla, Peddapalli, Siddipet, Yadadri Bhuvanagiri, Suryapet, Khammam, Jayashankar, Mulugu, Hanumakonda, Warangal, Mahbubabad, Jangaon, Bhadradri Kothagudem, Karimnagar, Jagtial and Wanaparthy districts.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said that from June 1 to July 27, the state received 60 per cent excess rainfall. The total rainfall received by the state during the period was 513 mm against the normal rainfall of 321.1 mm.

600 people from Morampalli village of Bhupalpally district and 19 workers stranded in a sand quarry near Gopalpur of Manthani in Peddapalli district were rescued. Six persons were rescued by an Army helicopter in Morampalli village.

Chief Secretary Santhi Kumari directed District Collectors to carry out intensive relief and rehabilitation programmes in areas which were severely affected by rains.

She said that steps are being taken to send NDRF and other support teams as per the requests of Collectors. Four more helicopters and 10 NDRF teams have been requested and some NDRF teams are expected soon, she added.

DGP Anjani Kumar said that with the help of the district administration, 7,000 people have been shifted to safer places so far. He said that national highways and other roads have been damaged in 85 places and steps have been taken with the officials of the concerned departments to repair them

The CS said that an NDRF team is being sent immediately to Khammam town and a helicopter to Burugampahad.

All primary health centres, community health centres, district hospitals and private hospitals in the districts should be kept open 24 hours a day, she said.
