Defence Minister Rajnath Singh underscored India’s commitment to maritime security and regional stability during his first visit to the Eastern Naval Command since assuming office for the second consecutive term. Accompanied by Chief of the Naval Staff Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi and Vice Admiral Rajesh Pendharkar, Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Eastern Naval Command, Singh boarded INS Jalashwa to witness dynamic naval operations firsthand.
Singh praised the Indian Navy’s pivotal role as the first responder in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR), emphasizing its capability to safeguard national interests and ensure regional peace. “Our Navy ensures that no nation suppresses another in the Indo-Pacific region or endangers its strategic autonomy based on economic strength or military power,” he stated, aligning with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of Security and Growth for All in the Region (SAGAR).
The Defence Minister highlighted the Navy’s recent achievements, including a daring rescue operation in March 2024 where 23 Pakistani nationals were freed from Somali pirates in the Arabian Sea. “This operation exemplifies the values of humanity and solidarity upheld by our Naval personnel,” Singh remarked, emphasizing India’s commitment to maritime security and humanitarian efforts.
Addressing the strategic importance of maritime security, Singh affirmed India’s dedication to maintaining free navigation, a rule-based world order, and regional stability. He outlined the Government’s efforts to strengthen India’s naval capabilities, citing expansions in shipyards and the augmentation of aircraft carriers.
Reflecting on his previous term, Singh recalled initiatives to bolster national security along India’s northern borders, while also prioritizing maritime security in the IOR. Looking forward, he pledged to further enhance the Indian Navy’s presence in the region and reinforce security measures across India’s borders.
The visit concluded with a traditional Barakhana, fostering camaraderie between Singh and the crew of the Sunrise Fleet at INS Dega, Visakhapatnam, where he received a ceremonial welcome with a 50-men Guard of Honour. Rajnath Singh’s visit to the Eastern Naval Command reaffirmed India’s commitment to maritime prowess, regional security, and international cooperation, marking a pivotal moment in India’s naval strategy under his leadership.
