We have a new girl in the glam world all set to make her acting debut, that too alongside a well-established actress Raveena Tandon. The newbie, Devangshi Sen, will be making her acting debut in an upcoming Hotstar series Karmma Calling where she will be seen playing Raveena Tandon’s daughter.
According to our sources, her debut promises a fresh and compelling performance, bringing a blend of talent and charisma to the screen.
So why delay any further? We got in touch with the debutant and the young beauty spilled some beans about her role in the series: “Karmma Calling is a show full of drama, mystery, and thrill. It’s set in this glamourous world of high society Alibaug that falls victim to Karma Talwar. The most powerful family in this world is the Kothari’s and I play the role of the youngest child Mira Kothari. Mira Kothari is a naive, bubbly, intelligent, and free-spirited girl. She’s also a social media influencer but oftentimes feels very much alone. Her father is always travelling, her brother is in college or just living his own life, and her mother doesn’t seem to care about her. So all in all, Mira is very much alone in her own home and is just trying to find someone who sees her.”
The youngster feels very grateful to play Mira Kothari, a bold personality whose style is impeccable which made it really fun for her to explore. “The show itself is so fast-paced and very intense. I’m someone who loves binge-watching shows with an element of mystery to it because once I’m hooked I can’t stop watching. So, I’m really excited to be apart of a series like this,” she shared.
As mentioned earlier, she plays the daughter of Raveena Tandon, a renowned actress, and working with such an actress in her debut project itself was a total learning experience. Devangshi feels, “Honestly, I was nervous but at the same time really blessed. To be working with an actor who is so experienced and talented is probably a dream of every new actor. Because Raveena is so grounded and secure in her craft that all she really did in a scene is push me to be better as well. So when doing scenes with Raveena, she not only made me perform better but also allowed me to learn and grow alot. I think one of the biggest things I learnt from Raveena, in regards to acting, is the amount of power the eyes hold. When performing scenes with her I sometimes had to remind myself that I am also acting because Raveena is able to convey so many emotions just through her eyes. That is something I’d like to learn to do better as well.”
Furthermore, sharing her memorable experiences from the sets of Karmma Calling, she said, “I think the biggest thing I struggled with initially was making hitting the marks or blocking for the camera. Because I did a lot of theatre, I’m used to reaching marks but while still having some freedom when it came to space. But for camera, I had to hit a specific point and lean a certain way so the suggestion shot is framed exactly how they want it for all takes. One day I was in these heels I could barely balance in and had to reach a specific point. So for one of the takes during Raveena’s lines, an AD came and physically moved my leg mid shot and we both just started smiling at each other and burst out laughing. For another scene, we were shooting outdoors and Raveena knew this was something I was still getting the hang of. So she found a stick on the grass and she moved it for me that I felt so supported at that moment. Later, I could confidently focus on acting and not subconsciously stressing about the technical things.”
Devangshi did a few things to get into the character of Mira Kothari. Which includes a lot of readings, and attending character workshops with Rachit Singh (who plays Vedant in the show).  Since Mira is an influencer, she also spent a lot of time stalking many influencers on Instagram.
After so many rehearsals and workshops, of course, the working experience might be memorable to her. Sharing interesting behind-the-scenes stories from the filming of the series, the actress, who wants to be part of movies where she can have my own songs and dances as well said, “One of the most fun experiences we had on set was when we were shooting at a dinner table. There were seven of us, including Raveena, and we spent a few hours filming the scene and the last thing we were shooting was the wide shots. At this point I think Raveena forgot one of the lines and told us to continue, then the next person forgot, the next and were just all trying to control our laughter that some of us almost started to cry. As soon as Ruchi (our director) yelled cut we all burst out into laughter. This kept happening for the next 2-3 takes and it was just too much fun but also we felt so bad for Ruchi because she needed to get this done before the sun came up.”
For the unknown, Devangshi is also a dancer and she fell in love with Hindi films because of their songs and dances. She is on the lookout to do more OTT shows in the next few years and transition to films.
“My dream director is definitely Zoya Akhtar. I’ve watched all her films multiple times and I can never get enough of them. What I love the most about her films is that I enjoy them, but at the same time, I end up learning something without realising it. After watching her films I am literally moved and can’t stop thinking about the film for a few hours at the least. I’m in love with her storytelling ability and would love to be apart of one of her films someday,” concluded the actress, who is currently working on another web series with a musical element to it, which she says is going to be fun.
