NTR District Collector S Dilli Rao has said that it is everyone’s responsibility to respect women, who give life. This awareness will pave the way for a drop in the number of crimes against women. The Collector was the chief guest of a programme organised on the occasion of International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, by the District Woman and Child Welfare Department. The Collector added that women should be given a sacred place.
Dilli Rao said it was sad that despite the State government imposing stern laws for the protection of women, they are still subjected to sexual harassment and rape. To bring down crimes against women, awareness should be brought among men on the strict laws and punishments being imposed by the department as per law.
He said that there was a need to create awareness of financial empowerment for women, irradiation of child marriages, and women’s laws and rights. He said that the women who were subjected to harassment should come forward and inform ChildLine (1098), the women’s helpline (181), or police and get protection. Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy has introduced the Disha app to protect women in the State, which was the first such step in the country. Complaints received through the Disha app will be investigated and action will be taken against the culprits at the earliest, he said.
A human chain was formed on the occasion. The Collector also became part of the human chain. City Mayor Rayana Bhagyalakshmi, Deputy Mayor A SreeShailaja Reddy, B Durga, counsellors Chaitanya Reddy, M Ratna Kumar, G Godavari, Madhuri Lavanya, A Vijayalakshmi and others were present.
