The Telangana Facilities Management Council (TFMC) held its annual conference where a panel discussion was conducted on healthcare advancements and trends. During the discussion, city-based doctors debunked myths and highlighted the threat posed by non-communicable diseases (NCDs) to public health.
Dr Pavan Uppala, an Endocrinologist from KIMS hospital, stated that the idea of ‘reversal of diabetes’ that is being circulated on the social media is false. He explained that although remission of the disease is possible, through appropriate medication and lifestyle changes, there is no cure for diabetes. Even people who undergo pancreatic transplants can still have diabetes, as medication can only have a remarkable effect, but it cannot cure anything completely.
The doctors emphasised that NCDs are a bigger pandemic than infectious diseases in the current context. Though technological advancements have led to an increase in human life span and a decrease in deaths caused by infectious diseases, NCDs remain a significant threat to human health.
Dr AV Gaurav Reddy, Managing Director of KIMS Sunshine Hospital, stated that according to ICMR, deaths due to NCDs have significantly increased despite the advancements made in healthcare technology. He added that our lifestyle choices are causing major health issues, and obesity is the real pandemic. Therefore, it is essential to make changes in our personality and adopt a healthy lifestyle to avoid NCDs.
Dr Gaurav suggested that people should undergo health checkups regularly, even if they do not have any symptoms, to avoid waiting until a health issue becomes critical. Any inconvenience should be consulted with a qualified physician. The doctors stressed the importance of adopting a healthy lifestyle to avoid NCDs and maintain good health.
