Road safety and anti-drug awareness drive held

Amid the vibrant festivities of the Sri Mahalakshmi Ammavari Jatara Mahotsavam, a sombre message resonated with the estimated 50,000 attendees. J. Puram Circle Inspector (CI) M Avatar spearheaded a significant road safety campaign, leveraging the large gathering to address the pervasive dangers of reckless driving, drug abuse, and cybercrime.
Held from February 7th to 9th in Kammasigadam village in Ranastalam mandal, under the JR Puram police station’s jurisdiction, the festival provided a unique platform for Mr. Avatar’s initiative. Using an innovative LED display, part of the “Sankalpam” (Resolution) initiative, he delivered a compelling presentation that resonated deeply with the predominantly young audience.
The campaign took on added urgency following a fatal traffic accident in the nearby Etcherla police station limits on Thursday, claiming two lives. Mr. Avatar underscored the tragic frequency with which such incidents are caused by intoxication and negligence. He implored young people to resist the temptation to drive under the influence, emphasizing the devastating and lasting consequences of such actions, not only for the victims but also for their families.
“Reckless behavior steals lives and shatters families,” Avatar stated. “We must value our lives and the lives of others.” The “Sankalpam – No Drugs Bro” initiative, a key component of the campaign, highlighted the interconnected dangers of substance abuse, excessive speed, and drunk driving. Mr. Avatar also stressed the importance of basic safety measures, such as wearing helmets, to mitigate the risk of injury.
District Superintendent of Police (SP) K.V. Maheshwar Reddy has pledged to expand these grassroots awareness programs through the Sankalpam initiative. Avatar made a personal appeal to the youth, urging them to prioritize their well-being and avoid harmful habits. He reiterated the police’s commitment to supporting young people through ongoing campaigns and promoting adherence to road safety regulations for a safer community.
The efforts of the JR Puram police, under Avatar’s leadership, have drawn widespread praise, underscoring the critical need for sustained public awareness campaigns to foster responsible behaviour on India’s roads.
