Visakhapatnam District Collector MN Harendhira Prasad has underscored the pressing need for youth to abstain from harmful substances such as drugs and cannabis, urging them to focus on building a prosperous future. Speaking at a Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan awareness rally held at RK Beach Road on Saturday, the Collector emphasized the destructive impact of addiction on the demographic dividend and society at large. The rally, which witnessed fervent participation from students, social workers, and government officials, was flagged off by Police Commissioner Dr Sankhabrata Bagchi. The event aimed to galvanize public opinion against drug abuse and promote preventive measures.
Collector Prasad, representing the Union Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, underscored the importance of widespread awareness in the fight against drug addiction. He emphasized the need for comprehensive education programs to inform the public about the severe health risks associated with drug use.
During the event, the Collector expressed deep concerns about the widespread cannabis epidemic, noting its detrimental effects. “The cannabis crisis is creating numerous problems. We must take stringent measures to control its supply and transportation,” he said. The Collector also advocated for college and university students to become campus ambassadors, leading efforts to bring about positive change among their peers. “Students should use their influence to promote a drug-free environment and seek support from Addiction Centers for those struggling with substance abuse,” he added.
Police Commissioner Sankhabrata Bagchi addressed the broader issue of drug abuse, emphasizing that the problem extends beyond just ganja to include all forms of intoxicants. “Drug abuse is a national issue, and we must not view it as a trend or a fashion statement. The consequences are severe and affect individuals and families alike,” Bhagchi warned. He also revealed that numerous parents have sought his guidance on preventing their children from falling into addiction, encouraging the use of rehabilitation services to address these challenges.
The event showcased a united front against drug abuse, with officials from various departments, including Social Welfare, BC Welfare, Education, Justice, and Revenue, actively participating in the rally.
