Vijayawada police have cracked a sensational case of theft involving iPhones and electronic devices worth Rs 2.5 crore. Under the city’s Suraksha scheme, the police arrested the accused and recovered the stolen items.
Vijayawada Commissioner of Police Rajasekhar Babu shared details of the case with the media on Friday. The prime accused, Deep Chand Prajapati, a resident of Uttar Pradesh and a car rental operator, conspired with his associates Sunil Kumar and Jayaprakash to steal iPhones from a warehouse in Vijayawada. The gang arrived in the city on February 5 and executed their plan meticulously. Six individuals were involved in the heist, cutting through the warehouse roof and disabling CCTV cameras before making away with electronic goods worth Rs 2.5 crore.
Based on a complaint from the warehouse owner, the police registered a case and launched an investigation. Using CCTV footage from the vicinity, they identified the suspects’ vehicle and deployed special teams. With the help of technical assistance, the vehicle’s location was traced to Bihar, where local authorities assisted in the arrests.
Commissioner Rajasekhar Babu stated that if there had been a two-hour delay, the stolen phones would have likely been sold in Nepal. Investigations also revealed that a person named Ranjith was providing the gang with information about warehouse locations.
The Commissioner credited the city’s CCTV network under the Suraksha scheme for helping the police swiftly identify the culprits.
