Kothagudem MLA Vanama Venkateshwar Rao got relief from the Supreme Court with the SC staying the Telangana High Court’s verdict on his disqualification. The SC issued notices to the respondents and directed them to file a counter affidavit within two weeks. The case was adjourned for four weeks.

Vanama’s opponent Jalagam Venkata Rao filed a petition in the High Court saying that Vanama had given false information in his election affidavit.

After hearing the petition, the Telangana High Court declared Vanama’s election void on July 25. The High Court also issued orders declaring Jalagam Venkatarao as the elected MLA in place of Vanama.

Vanama then approached the Telangana High Court seeking a stay on the judgement but the HC refused to grant a stay. Then he approached the Supreme Court.
In 2018, Vanama contested as a Congress candidate from Kothagudem and won against BRS candidate Jalagam Venkata Rao by a margin of around 4,000 votes.
