APCC president YS Sharmila has written to Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu seeking compensation for flood-hit farmers and immediate desilting of drains and canals. She said that the coastal districts have been severely affected by last week’s heavy rainfall.
Sharmila demanded immediate action to address the losses suffered by the farming community due to the floods. “It is disappointing to note that neither your cabinet colleagues nor the local MLAs or MPs are seen addressing the plight of the farmers in the affected areas and this starkly contrasts with the frequent promises and assurances made by your government. The Congress strongly urges you to treat this situation as a State Emergency. We request the immediate deployment of teams to assess the damage and the prompt announcement and disbursement of sufficient compensation to the affected farmers,” she wrote.
Sharmila said that the floods contributed to the flooding of the drainage system, exacerbated by the accumulation of silt in drains. “The previous government failed to address this problem, neglecting desilting and canal repairs, and potentially diverting funds intended for these purposes. We request you to immediately allocate funds and direct the district authorities to desilt drains and repair canals.”
