Six killed as lorry crashes into auto-rickshaw

Six persons were killed and one more was critically injured in a gory accident near Yellanda village in Warangal district on Wednesday. The accident happened when a lorry, reportedly driven by a drunken driver rammed into an auto-rickshaw, the police said.

The deceased were identified as auto-rickshaw driver Battu Srinivas (42), Jaothu Kurieri (25), Rupchand Damin (35) Nithin Mandal (12), Arjun Mandal (20) and Surrey Kureri (30). The injured was identified as Ameer. Suresh Kurieri and Rupchand were from Bihar and they settled in the Warangal.

According to police, the lorry driver, who hailed from Rajasthan, was driving the vehicle under the influence of alcohol when the accident happened. The lorry was travelling on the wrong side of the road when it hit the auto-rickshaw. Police Commissioner AV Ranganath visited the scene of the accident.

The accident happened on the Warangal-Khammam highway at Yellanda village under Wardhannapet mandal in the district.

Assistant Commissioner of Police Suresh told the media that the driver of the lorry, which hit the auto-rickshaw, was driving the vehicle in an inebriated state. The passengers in the auto-rickshaw were on their way to a forest area to collect honey.

The injured was shifted to MGM Hospital.

The bodies were shifted to Community Health Centre at Wardhannapet for post-mortem.

The police registered a case under Section 304A IPC (causing death by rash and negligent driving). The lorry driver was arrested.

A case is registered under Section 304A IPC (causing death by rash or negligent act) and the truck driver is in police custody, said Suresh.
