Must read

Popular Telugu film director Srinu Vaitla has completed 25 years in the industry. He made his debut with Nee Kosam, starring Ravi Teja and Maheswari as the lead pair. The film was released on December 3, 1999. “I was disappointed when my first film was halted. At that time, Ravi Teja, who is a close friend of mine, had immense confidence in my talent,” recalls Srinu Vaitla about his debut project. Determined to make his mark, he wrote a story that suited a budget-friendly film, with Ravi Teja playing the lead. “New producers took up the project, but the film faced several hurdles. Thanks to Ravi Teja’s support, I was able to complete it,” he said.
Media baron and producer Ramoji Rao saw the film, liked it and purchased it outright. “He actually stepped in like a real producer, settled some dues related to the film and ensured its release,” said Srinu. Actor Nagarjuna also watched the film and later offered him a directorial project. Nee Kosam went on to win seven Nandi Awards, including Best Debut Director, Best Actress and Best Screenplay Writer.
At the time, Ravi Teja had been playing small roles and was introduced as a lead actor in Krishna Vamsi’s Sindhooram. “He is a talented actor and that’s why I chose him as the lead for my debut film,” said Srinu. The duo worked hard on Nee Kosam and it performed reasonably well at the box office. Ramoji Rao’s contribution to its release led to Srinu’s second project, Anandam, which he directed under Rao’s banner. “Ramoji Rao appreciated my debut work and offered me another opportunity,” said the director.
Reflecting on his journey, Srinu expressed happiness at completing 25 years as a filmmaker. “From my childhood, I wanted to be a director. After graduating, I moved to Chennai to pursue my dream,” he recalled. “My passion for cinema and direction has driven me all these years. I never imagined I would complete 25 years in this industry. My career is filled with magical and memorable moments,” he added.
When asked to name his top films, Srinu listed Anandam, Venky, Ready, Dookudu and Dhee. Addressing the speculation about directing a Tamil remake of Dookudu with Ajith, he clarified, “I was working on Badshah back then, which turned out to be a huge blockbuster. As a result, I couldn’t take up the remake. However, I don’t regret it.”
Srinu also emphasised staying updated with the latest technology and trends in cinema. “Technology evolves rapidly, and I make an effort to keep up with it. Filmmaking is much easier now compared to earlier times,” he remarked. Talking about his upcoming project, he shared, “I have completed 70% of the story and will announce the project details soon.”
With a career spanning two and a half decades, Srinu Vaitla continues to evolve, cementing his legacy as one of Telugu cinema’s leading directors.
