The Telangana Government on Wednesday released Rs 153 crore to clear 9,990 pending bills of gram panchayats across the state. The payment, made on a single day, marks one of the largest disbursements towards grassroots-level civic bodies in recent months.
According to officials, the focus was on clearing bills valued under Rs 10 lakh, particularly those pending up to August 2024. This decision is being seen as a corrective measure to ease the financial burden inherited from the BRS government, which had left a large backlog of unpaid amounts to rural local bodies.
The government also released Rs 85 crore under the Special Development Fund (SDF) for works undertaken in gram panchayats. The fund is expected to help revive and complete stalled development projects across rural Telangana.
The move has been welcomed by elected representatives and panchayat officials, who had been struggling to execute basic services due to lack of funds. The government assured that future payments will also be taken up in a phased, transparent manner to ensure the smooth functioning of panchayats.
