TS Chief Secretary Santhi Kumari has directed the Collectors and Police Officers in the districts to step up vigil and be on high alert as the Indian Meteorological Department has warned of heavy rains in many parts of the state over the next 48 hours.
The Chief Secretary held a teleconference with the District Collectors, Police Commissioners and Superintendents of Police on heavy rains in the state. The CS cautioned the Collectors that in the wake of IMD’s warning that heavy rains are expected in many parts of the state in the next 48 hours, measures should be taken to prevent loss of life or property. She pointed out that already many projects, ponds, dams, and canals in the Godavari basin were brimming due to heavy rains over the past two days and they might start overflowing. She said that special officers comprising revenue and police officers should be posted at the causeways flowing at dangerous levels and precautionary measures taken to cordon off the entire area to prevent movement of vehicular traffic. People in low-lying areas and flood-prone areas should be shifted to safer places. Steps should be taken to ensure that necessary materials are available in the already identified rehabilitation centers. The state and national highway roads damaged by rains have to be repaired immediately.
With the water level at Bhadrachalam reaching more than 43 feet, the first danger alert has already been issued. The Bhadradri Collector was directed asked to review the flood coming to Godavari and take appropriate precautionary measures. She said that sanitation works should be carried out vigorously in all the villages. NDRF troops have been kept ready in various parts of the state and they can be used in case of emergency. Collectors were directed to inform people through local cable TVs and other broadcast media about the precautionary measures taken in the wake of heavy rains. She said that people should be prevented from visiting waterfalls and other tourist spots till normalcy is restored.
DGP Anjani Kumar said that 60 families in two villages of Charla area of BhadradriKothagudem district have been shifted to rehabilitation centers. He said that several roads were damaged due to heavy rains in some parts of Vikarabad. Police officers in all areas had been put on alert and they were constantly monitoring the situation.
