In a tragic incident, four members of a family died by suicide at Diddekunta village in Simhadripuram mandal of Andhra Pradesh on Saturday. The family was found hanging from a tree in their agricultural field.
According to the police, the deceased, Nagendra (41), a farmer, had taken 15 acres of land on lease to cultivate crops. He borrowed over Rs 20 lakh from private moneylenders to fund the farming. However, after suffering heavy losses due to crop failure, Nagendra faced relentless pressure from lenders to repay the amount.
Unable to bear the harassment, Nagendra, along with his wife Vani (38), daughter Gayatri (12), and son Bhargav (11), took the extreme step. Nagendra’s mother and relatives discovered the family when they failed to return home. Police suspect that after killing their children, the couple hanged themselves.
The bodies have been shifted to the Government General Hospital (GGH) for postmortem. A case has been registered, and an investigation is underway.
The incident has cast a pall of gloom over Diddekunta village. Agriculture Minister K Atchannaidu expressed shock and grief over the tragedy and directed officials to inquire into the circumstances leading to the incident. Kadapa District In-charge Minister S Savitha spoke to the District Collector and assured all possible assistance to the bereaved family members.
