Telangana Director General of Prisons and Correction Centres, Dr Soumya Mishra on Thursday inaugurated a training session for the third batch of jail warders at the State Institute of Correctional Administration (SICA), Chanchalguda.
In all, 85 trainees, including 78 male and seven women reported to the venue. They will undergo physical and mental training over the next nine months. The physical fitness will stress on foot drill, firing practice, karate, self defence and yoga. The candidates will also have to study the Indian Penal Code, Criminal Procedure Code, Jail manual Legal Acts and security protocols, inmate management and rehabilitation strategies. While the physical training will last for seven months, two months have been allocated for studies.{ Addressing the candidates, Mishra said, “It is a great achievement to secure a government job. Following the training all the candidates will become an asset to the Telangana Prison Department. The department is well reputed all over India and I believe all of you will add value to it. The training provided here will polish your skills. As a lay person you must have thought of prisons as high walls built to apprehend people. Prisons are much more than buildings and walls. The purpose of prisons is to reform people. The aim is to reform criminals and not just to keep them in custody. The Prison department aims to reform these people so that they could be accepted by the society and lead a good life.”
She further said, “This is why it is called the Prisons and correctional services department. Telangana is well known as far as prison reform is concerned. All of you will be taught the basics; warders are the face of the department since they are in close contact with the inmates. This is why you are required to be physically and mentally be fit to face various challenges. Hence, the course includes lessons on criminology, psychology, human rights, modern technology and legal knowledge.”
