Minister for Forest and Environment Indrakaran Reddy was the chief guest at the Golf for Wildlife and Nature Charity Tournament organised by the World Wide Fund (WWF).

Speaking on the occasion, Minister Indrakaran Reddy explained about the programmes being implemented by the Telangana Government as part of environment protection. He said Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao is implementing innovative programmes like no other state is providing.

“The Telangana government is in the forefront in protecting the wild animals in the forests. As part of the government’s flagship programme “Greening of Telangana”, we had set a target of planting 230 crore saplings and exceeded that target and planted more than 270 crore saplings. Greenery in Telangana has increased by 7.7 per cent through Haritha Haram.”

“We are getting appreciation from other states, at the national and international level. Hyderabad has been recognised twice as the Tree City of the World and recently as the World Green City. Under the Living Green category, the greenery around the Outer Ring Road was awarded the World Green City Award.

Due to the restoration measures implemented by the government, the environment and fauna of the forests have improved greatly. The number of tigers has increased significantly in the Amrabad and Qawwal Tiger Reserve areas.

We are relocating the people of the villages in the core area to the plains and giving them better rehabilitation so that the big tigers can roam freely in the tiger sanctuaries and make them suitable for permanent habitat. In the eco tourism project, the local Chenchus and the local people are being made partners and they are being given employment. Around 50 families are getting employment due to this.

In accordance with Chief Minister KCR’s idea that forests should grow, monkeys should move to those forests, we have set up a monkey conservation and rehabilitation centre, the second in the country and the first in the state, at Chincholi near the district headquarters of Nirmal.
