Tension escalated at Gangavaram port on Monday as a significant number of workers from the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant (VSP) attempted to enter the premises, leading to a standoff with the authorities.

The VSP workers expressed their frustration towards the Gangavaram port management for hindering the supply of coal to the VSP. The workers gathered at the Balacheruvu gate in Gajuwaka and made an attempt to enter the Gangavaram port premises to protest against the disruptions in coal supply. This action resulted in a heated confrontation between the police and the agitated VSP workers, adding to the tension.

The determined workers managed to push past the police and advance towards the Gangavaram port gate. As a precautionary measure, the police erected an iron fence to block their path. The situation involved around 1,500 steel plant employees and 1,800 contract workers who participated in the demonstration. Eventually, they assembled in front of the Gangavaram port gate, raising slogans against the port management. However, the police intervened and dispersed the protesters to restore order.
