The Governor, Dr Tamilisai Soundararajan, came down heavily on the Telangana Government during International Women’s Day celebrations at the Raj Bhavan on Monday.

On Padi Koushik Reddy’s elevation as the government whip, Dr Tamilisai said, “It is very disheartening that the highest office which is held by women is ridiculed, insulted and humiliated. And the person who humiliated the highest office is rewarded. That is the message they have given to the people of Telangana. When a person throws stones at a woman and if you garland him, what message are you giving to womanhood? If a woman is insulted, I am with them, and if I am insulted, women are with me. It is not me, derogatory words against any woman are bad. They use the worst words. As women, we are ready to face the challenges of Telangana.”

The event was attended by female professionals, celebrities, public representatives, and actresses Kushboo and Poonam Kaur.

Speaking at the function, Dr Tamilisai said that worried about defections many women politicians and officers didn’t accept her invitation.

“We had sent invitations to women ministers, politicians, mayors and officials. Apart from differences in political ideology, when a celebration is planned everyone has to come together. Culture is vanishing. If an invitation is coming from one place it is seen differently. They don’t see the affection sent through the invitation, but are worried about possible defections,” she said.

“Suicides are going on in Telangana. I have spoken on this many times. The death of Dr Preethi, who belongs to a tribal community, was very sad. No matter what anyone says, Dr Preethi’s death cannot be ignored,” she said.

“As a doctor, I know how difficult it is for Dr Preethi to clear exams and reach the PG level. I feel that the extended hand should go to the last person who is suffering in villages, suffering in tribal areas.

There shouldn’t be any politics. There shouldn’t be any differences of opinion. Whether it is a village sarpanch office or whether it is Raj Bhavan the ultimate objective is reaching out to the needy, particularly women and the underprivileged,” she said.

“There may be criticism against me, but whatever things I take forward are for the people of Telangana. I have no personal ambitions here,” the Governor said.

Giving a warning to social media trolls, the Governor said, “When you are on Facebook and Twitter be decent. Don’t keep pricking women. You don’t know the strength of women.”

“This is the land of Rudrama Devi. The area I come from is known for the heroic women of Vilanar. Coming from such a place, I am facing a similar situation,” the Governor said.
