Agriculture and Marketing Minister Thummala Nageshwara Rao sent proposals to the Centre to immediately set up a National Turmeric Board in Telangana to ensure the welfare of farmers as the Turmeric Board will focus on developing the skills of turmeric farmers to produce value-added turmeric products.
He requested the Centre through a letter dated February 17, 2024, to set up the National Turmeric Board which was recently announced by the PM in the Nizamabad district of Telangana.
The Minister said that the establishment of the Turmeric Board in Telangana is a long-time hope of Turmeric farmers. It is known to all that in the last parliament elections, turmeric farmers protested by filing a large number of nominations to contest in the Nizamabad LS seat.
In response to this, the Centre gave a clear promise to set up a Turmeric Board, and then on October 4, 2023, the Centre issued a gazette for the formation of the Turmeric Board.
The gazette mentions only details regarding the appointment of committee members without a budget proposal.
In response to this, the newly formed TS government intensified its efforts to set up a Turmeric Board with the concerned Central departments to protect the interests of Telangana’s turmeric farmers.
Nizamabad district is a major turmeric-growing district in the state. Nizamabad turmeric farmers have been regularly appealing to the Centre to declare a support price for turmeric and to set up a National Turmeric Board since the last 10 years.
In Telangana, in the year 2019-20, turmeric was cultivated on 1,39,698 acres and 3,35,425 tonnes of turmeric was produced and by 2022-23, turmeric was cultivated on 56,174 acres and 1,73,610 tonnes of turmeric was produced. In the year 2023-24, the area under turmeric cultivation was only 34,978 acres.
In this context, to help turmeric farmers, stabilize the price of turmeric, increase the area under turmeric cultivation and increase the manufacturing and exports of value-added turmeric products the National Turmeric Board should be established in Nizamabad district, he said.
The National Turmeric Board focuses on turmeric and value-added product development in the country. The National Turmeric Board will facilitate the development of turmeric farming by coordinating with the Spices Board and other government agencies.
There is considerable worldwide interest in the medical benefits of turmeric. In this context, the Minister said that the National Turmeric Board will help to increase awareness on the consumption of turmeric, develop new markets internationally, promote research and development in turmeric value-added products.
