Toxic chemicals a threat to Musi river, says MLA

Munugode MLA Komatireddy Rajagopal Reddy expressed serious concern regarding the situation surrounding the Musi river. He said, “We have already lost a lot due to the toxic chemicals in the river. The crops and vegetables grown here cannot be sold. People are forced to buy drinking water. If purification doesn’t happen, there will be no humans left!”
He emphasised the need for government support for the Musi cleansing initiative. “The BRS, which has consumed a thousand crores under the guise of cleansing, is now preaching ethics,” he criticised. He warned that obstructing the Musi purification project led by Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy would mean signing a death sentence for Hyderabad, Ranga Reddy and Nalgonda districts. He urged KCR, KTR and Harish Rao to visit the Musi villages and witness the situation firsthand. “What has happened to Musi? Once, it was the lifeline for Ranga Reddy, Hyderabad and Nalgonda districts. Now it has turned into a pit of filth,” he remarked.
The Musi river, which originates in Vikarabad and merges with the Krishna river at Wadapally in Nalgonda district, was once known for its life-giving waters. However, it has now become undrinkable, and even the crops grown with this water cannot be sold.
The primary issue is the discharge of toxic chemicals and drainage water into Musi from industrial areas. “Waste from households within the municipality is now mixing into the Musi,” he noted. Daily, around 2000 million liters of sewage and chemical-laden water are released into the Musi.
He called for job allocation to assist families affected by the Musi cleansing efforts. “We should focus on providing stalls in Musi tourism zones and offering double-bedroom houses for those impacted,” he added.
He warned that if the Musi cleansing project is halted, the affected villages could become uninhabitable. “We will soon take the BRS leaders to the banks of the Musi to show them the reality. If they do not come, we will bring the affected people to their homes,” he stated.
