The Vice-Chancellor of Velagapudi Ramakrishna Siddhartha Engineering College Deemed to be University, Prof P Venkateswara Rao, has unveiled the trophies of the Nadella Basavapurnaiah Memorial All-India Invitation Volleyball Tournament for Women. The event was held on the university premises in Kanuru, near Vijayawada, on Thursday.
The tournament will be conducted by the Nadella Basavapurnaiah Trust from December 12 to 15 at the newly constructed VR Siddhartha Indoor Sports Complex.
Speaking on the occasion, Prof Venkateswara Rao praised Nadella Brahmaji Rao, national volleyball player, for organising the tournament in memory of his late father Basavapurnaiah. The Siddhartha Academy of General and Technical Education is extending its full support for providing infrastructure facilities, he added.
He said that the indoor sports complex has been constructed with international standards and it will be used to play as many as 14 sports disciplines, such as volleyball, basketball, table tennis, badminton, wrestling, boxing, and squash. The university encourages sporting talents by providing admissions and all facilities for them, he added.
Tournament organiser and Nadella Basavapurnaiah Trust Trustee Brahmaji Rao said that the six best women’s teams — South Central Railway (Secunderabad), Central Railway (Mumbai), Southern Railway (Chennai), Gujarat Sports Hostel, Integral Coach Factory (ICF, Chennai), and Bank of Maharashtra (Pune) — are participating in the tournament. Penamaluru MLA Bode Prasad, Vijayawada East MLA Gadde Rama Mohana Rao, Siddhartha Academy president Dr C Nageswara Rao, secretary Palaldugu Lakshmana Rao and other dignitaries will attend the inaugural function, he said.
OTT Hyderabad, TMT Simhadri, Coimbatore-based GRG organisation, Andhra Hospital, Help Hospital etc. are sponsoring the tournament. The total prize money is Rs.2.75 lakh. They are making arrangements for around 1,000 people to watch the matches, he explained.
