Debunking the claims that Telangana is burdened with debt and that the government is burdened with interest payment and debt servicing, the BRS called it propaganda.

A BRS statement said, “The reality is that Telangana’s interest payment for fiscal 2023 stood at Rs 15,220 crore and it’s just 8% of the total expenditure of the Telangana Government.”

Telangana saw an increase in interest payments and its interest expenditure was Rs 15,220 crore in the first three-quarters of the current fiscal compared to Rs 13,521 crore in the corresponding period of the previous fiscal.

The BRS said that this is one of the lowest levels of debt servicing as per the CAG and RBI reports among all major states.

Tamil Nadu saw the sharpest increase in interest payments and its interest expenditure was Rs 28,618 crore in the first three-quarters of the current fiscal compared to Rs 13,085 crore in the corresponding period of the previous fiscal.

Tamil Nadu is followed by Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, West Bengal, Karnataka, Rajasthan, Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat and then Telangana.

Even the share of interest in costs which is at 8% for Telangana is 16% for West Bengal, followed by Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Telangana.

The party said on its official handle, “The Centre’s interest payment per year is Rs 9,400 billion and that is 23.8% of expenditure.
The propaganda that Telangana is in a debt trap is not only false but is also a misleading claim frequently made by both the BJP and the Congress.”
