Two agricultural workers lost their lives and 20 others sustained injuries when a Bolero transport vehicle they were travelling in was hit by a lorry at Thimmampet in Garladinne mandal on National Highway 44 in the early hours of Sunday.
Circle Inspector Koulutlayya said that 26 agricultural workers were returning to their village after harvesting oranges in an orchard. A speeding lorry rammed into their Bolero vehicle, killing Mangamma (50) and Pullamma (45) on the spot.
Twenty others suffered injuries of varying severity. All the injured were initially taken to the Government General Hospital (GGH) in Singanamala. Four of them, who were critically injured, were later shifted to the GGH in Anantapur for advanced treatment.
The victims hailed from Kalluru and Yeguvapalli villages in Atmakur mandal. Police have registered a case and shifted the bodies for post-mortem examination.
