With just a fortnight remaining until the much-anticipated declaration of Assembly election results in Andhra Pradesh, tensions are high among the contenders of the ruling YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) and the Telugu Desam Party-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA). June 4 is set to be the day when the political fates of these heavyweights will be determined, leaving both camps on edge. The spotlight is firmly on the Pithapuram Assembly constituency in East Godavari district, where a high-stakes showdown is unfolding between incumbent Kakinada MP and YSRCP candidate Vanga Geetha and the charismatic Jana Sena Party leader, Pawan Kalyan.
In a notable departure from the usual political mudslinging, Vanga Geetha has opted for a campaign focused solely on party-centric agendas, steering clear of personal attacks against her opponent, Pawan Kalyan. Similarly, Pawan Kalyan has refrained from personal attacks against Geetha, directing his criticisms towards the YSRCP as a whole. Even members of the Mega family, who have campaigned for Pawan Kalyan, have avoided direct jibes at Geetha.
A noteworthy turn of events unfolded a week after the polls when Vanga Geetha publicly expressed her admiration for the Mega family. In a surprising statement, she declared, “Set aside politics, my family and I are great fans of brother Chiranjeevi, Pawan Kalyan, and the entire Mega family. I always have great respect for them.” Geetha emphasised her campaign’s focus on issues rather than personal attacks, reaffirming her respect for the Mega family, including Naga Babu.
Vanga Geetha’s political journey has been nothing short of intriguing, spanning various parties.
Starting with the Telugu Desam Party, she later joined the Praja Rajyam Party (PRP) founded by Megastar Chiranjeevi in 2008. Her victory in the 2009 elections from Pithapuram on a PRP ticket was followed by a transition to the Congress after the party’s merger with the PRP. Finally, in 2019, she aligned with the YSRCP, emerging triumphant as the Lok Sabha member from Kakinada.
